Less salt, more water prevents kidney stones in kids April 13, 2009

Pediatricians at the UI Children’s Hospital say they are witnessing a steady increase in the number of kids with kidney stones. The result is more expensive doctor appointments and more time in the hospital, said Patrick Brophy, a UI associate professor of pediatrics. Although there are many causes of kidney stones, he said, he suspects the growing number of children with the disease comes from a diet heavy in salty and processed foods and a lack of water.
