Alternative therapies ‘cut IVF fertility rates’ July 15, 2007

AcupunctureHerbal medicines, reflexology and acupuncture could reduce pregnancy rates in women having IVF treatment, scientists say.

AcupunctureAcupunctureResearchers found women who used complementary and alternative therapies (CATs) while undergoing fertility treatment were 30 per cent less lAcupunctureAcupunctureikely to become pregnant than those who did not. 

Growing numbers are turning to such therapies to reduce stress levels during fertility treatments, despite evidence that counselling may be more effective.

Surveys suggest around 30 per cent of the population have used herbal remedies.

Dr Jacky Boivin, a psychologist from Cardiff University in Wales, who today released the results of the first large-scale study into the effect of CATs on IVF, suggested herbal medicines could reduce the effectiveness of drugs used in fertility treatment.
