personal battle against Alzheimer’s February 14, 2008

 Wade VanRyzin says he’s been married to three women in the last 39 years who’ve all inhabited the body of his wife, Christine Baum VanRyzin.

“The first one took a lot of chances,” the Appleton man said of the high school sweetheart he married in 1969 who is the mother of his two children.

Then there was the woman who in 1989 stood up in a younger sister’s wedding, her face stiff and frozen, tremors visibly causing her flower bouquet to shake on the altar. A scared woman afraid to seek the counsel of a doctor, fairly certain her symptoms mimicked her mother’s.

“It was a dark time, kind of like ‘The Lord of the Rings,'” Wade recalled. “I never knew what was happening and or what was going to happen when I walked through the door from work.”

These days, there’s the Christine who since 2003 has called herself a survivor of an early onset form of Alzheimer’s disease. It’s the Christine that Wade prefers best.

At 59, Christine has journeyed to age 90 and back again. But with knowledge, she said, comes survival. “Alzheimer’s disease has taken part of my life but not my hope,” she wrote in her book, “Alzheimer’s Averted: A Path to Survival.” Read More….
