Released on DVD in the spring of 2009, The Living Matrix is a film that sheds light on new and innovative ideas in the pursuit of healing and wellness. Numerous experts including scientists, holistic practitioners, psychologists and bioenergetic researchers discuss various topics that promote an energetic, information oriented model rather than the chemical model that drives modern medicine today. The film highlights examples of healing journeys for individuals suffering from ailments such as cerebral palsy, a brain tumor, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

One of the initial subjects the film addresses is the use of quantum physics in understanding our bodies.

The film explains that much of our current biological model is based on an understanding that our bodies are chemical machines and applies Newtonian clockwork physics. However, the film’s experts assert that quantum physics may be a more accurate scientific application in understanding our physiology and wellness. The idea that the body is decentralized and maintains a connective energy field or body field is explored.

Indeed Albert Einstein once stated, “The field is the sole governing agency of the particle.” But what does this mean to our understanding of DNA?

Shockingly, Bruce Lipton, PhD, MD, cell biologist and former professor at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, argues that our genes and DNA do not control human biology. Certainly, this has significant implications on our current medical model and how chronic disease is studied and treated.

For example, Lipton explains that it is commonly believed that cancer can run in families based on genetics. However, Lipton states that when children are adopted into families that have a significant cancer medical history, the adopted children will have cancer with the same propensity than any other child in the family. Clearly, these children do not possess the same DNA structure, but are subject to the same external factors. This leads us to the study of epigenetics or environmental influences on genetic expression.

We’ve all heard the common adage, “Mind over Matter,” but experts in the film believe there is real truth in this statement and that intention can produce biological changes.

Herman Koning, MD, founder of the Dutch Doctors’ Association for Biophysical Medicine and Bio-information Therapy explains, “If you think you have an incurable disease, if you think it yourself, you are right. If you think your problem is curable then you are also right. It all depends on your intention.”

Lynne McTaggart, science journalist and award-winning author, illustrates this theory with a study that was conducted in Houston where a group of patients were undergoing knee operations for arthritis. Half of these patients had the actual operation performed and the other half had a “sham” operation where the knee was cut open but no other corrective surgery took place. Over three years of follow-up, researchers found that both groups of patients reported no pain.

Another topic the film addresses is that of the heart. Rollin McCraty, PhD, Director of Research at the Institute of HeartMath, states the heart generates large, rhythmic electromagnetic signals and its patterns are linked to emotions. A smooth, coherent or ordered rhythm synchronizes the body and energy field, while negative emotions can lead to incoherent patterns.

Even more interesting, the heart is said to have its own nervous system that processes information and responds faster to outside stimulation than the brain. “It appears as though the heart and brain have access to a field of information not bound by time or space,” Rollin explained, also adding this is old news to the field of quantum physics.

Certainly, information in its many manifestations within the body and human body-field is a recurrent theme in this film. The notion that there may be methods that can change disturbed information, or disease, could lead to many breakthroughs for the human condition and empower individuals to enable their body’s own self-healing capacities through energy and emotional consciousness.

Marilyn Mandala Schlitz, PhD, scientist and anthropologist, states at the culmination of the film, “I think that there is absolutely no question that our health care today, at a global level, is in crisis. And it’s a crisis of meaning, it’s a crisis of economics, it’s a crisis of leadership. And it’s a crisis of our models and our understanding of what promotes or facilitates healing.”

Science is continually evolving and it seems that there is a wellness revolution at hand that is shifting a disease centered model to one that focuses on healing. Chronic disease coupled with diminished quality of life is leading many individuals to take charge of their own health and seek alternative options and methods of understanding.
